It’s happened! I moved to Belfast and started a new job! Talk about moving outside your comfort zone on all fronts!
Along with moving countries and starting a new job comes a kind of complete chaos that I don’t deal with very well. See, I’m a planner, an organizer. I like it when things are tidy and I can be prepared for every new day (as the name of the blog suggests). When you’re navigating a new city and learning how to drive on the “wrong” side of the road, your world goes a little topsy turvy and things you used to be so good at get left by the wayside.
In Paris, I was great at planning ahead for lunch. I would make several salads in one go or enough stew or soup to last me through the week. I had frozen portions in the freezer that I could grab on my way out the door if I hadn’t gotten the chance to make anything fresh.
Here, in my sparsely furnished rental kitchen, I don’t have all the things I need yet to be able to work well in the kitchen. I don’t have my boyfriend’s fancy knives that make cutting up my veggies a breeze, I don’t have large enough food containers that will allow me to toss my salad without half it’s contents falling out, better yet I don’t have enough money to buy enough fresh produce to make a salad worthy of the name because all my money has been going to basic new apartment things, like internet, sheets and a TV.
What’s important, though, as my sister so wisely reminded me last weekend on her first visit to Belfast, is that all change creates discomfort and it’s only with time that things will feel better and that’s ok. My family moved around so much when I was growing up that you would expect me to be immune to this kind of discomfort, my ability to adapt should be way up there, yet no matter how much change you’ve experienced in your life, every new one brings with it it’s own special challenges. Change is a good thing, and in my case, it was absolutely necessary professionally. So here’s to the chaos of the unfamiliar and to the near future as order slowly once again takes it rightful place in my life. Until that time, I guess I’ll have to settle for Cheddar, Ham and spicy Mustard on seeded Hovis bread!
